Refectory
When an individual lives with God, his entire life is sanctified and becomes beautiful. Even such a simple action as the eating of food may become a type of continuation of service.
The refectory is a comfortable room on the ground floor of the convent. There are stained-glass windows, walls decorated with frescoes according to stories from the Gospel: the Wedding at Cana in Galilee, the Meeting with the Samaritan Woman at the well, the Mystical Supper. All somehow pacifies the soul and draws away from daily cares. At the sound of the bell ringer, a common prayer is sung at the refectory and the priest or mother blesses the food. Then a reader opens the book on the lectern and, receiving a blessing, begins to read from the lives of the saints or the works of the holy fathers. In this way, receiving bodily food, sisters partake spiritually. Everyone who has been in the convent says that the food, even the most simple, is very delicious. And that is easily explained – everything is prepared with prayer and love.
Following the singing of thanksgiving prayers and the magnification to the Holy New Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth and the enochess Barbara, the meal is concluded.
The monastery has its own bakery, in which not only rye and wheat bread is baked, but also festal pies with various fillings, cakes, honey-cakes and rolls. The process of smoking fish is being explored. Honey kvass is prepared for Orthodox exhibitions. Monastery herbal tea is being made.
Not only the sisters of the convent, but the workers of workshops, pilgrims, parishioners, sick and simply poor people can also eat a meal here.
