ICON PAINTING STUDIO
The studio was organized even before the monastery construction had begun. The first serious work for the iconographers was the writing of the icons for the church’s iconostasis. Working on an icon allows one to enter into the beauty and harmony of the ancient language of iconography. After all, an icon is not a painting, but a spiritual revelation to the world expressed in paint. Saint Simeon of Thessalonica says that an icon is true painting, as Scripture in books, and divine grace resides in it because that which is depicted is holy. The labor of an iconographer is connected with his internal spiritual life. Adhering to the ancient traditions of iconography changes a person, his conscience and perception of the world. An icon is always written on a well prepared board dried in natural conditions for more than 10 years. Icon painters make their own paints using minerals, semi-precious stones (lasurite, malachite, dioptase, azurite, vivianite and others). Ancient traditions of Byzantine, Greek and Russian masters are studied in the studio. An icon of any size, from very small to large iconostases, can be written for you according to your order and your home can be beautified by namesake and family icons.

MOSAIC WORKSHOP

Mosaics are used for decorating the interior and exterior of a church. Artists specializing in mosaics are masters of various techniques and are proficient in the technology of gold smelting. Works may range from fragments such as ornamental inlays and other decorative elements up to complete compositions, including the interior of a dome or apse. Restorative works are also performed. Presently, the technique of encaustic painting (applying wax-based paints on metal, wood or plaster) is being explored.

MURAL PAINTING STUDIO

Mural painting has been widely practiced in church arts since ancient times. Over time, works on the interior and exterior walls of the monastery have been executed by our mural painters using silicate paints in both the “dry” and “wet” mural painting style. Painting of frescos on wet plaster requires mastery and organization because no corrections can be made. In painting on a dry wall, natural pigments (minerals) are used since they are impermeable to the natural elements. The careful preparation of crude plaster, adherence to the canons and rules of ancient masters enables our mural painters to maintain a high level of quality in their work. Ancient murals of Byzantine and Russian churches serve as the source of inspiration in preparing sketches for frescos and mosaics.
